Library Expansion Project Facts and Figures

The expansion is necessary because:

  • The town’s population grew from 10,561 in 1975 to 14,588 in 2006, a 38% increase.

  • The book collection has grown from 40,000 volumes in 1975 to over 70,000 in 2006.

  • The children’s section was designed for 12,000 volumes; it now has over 24,000 items.

  • The non-print collection contained 240 items in 1975; it now contains over 6,000.

  • Library circulation has increased from 86,705 in 1975 to 164,698 in 2006.

  • In 1975, there were no computers; currently there are 22 in the library.

  • There are only 5 computers for public Internet access; demand exceeds supply.

  • The information explosion on the Internet requires the availability of more public computers.

Library stacks are 29-31 inches apart; ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requires 36 inches minimum. We would need to remove ¼ of the shelving to comply with the code.

  • Reconfiguration of the parking lot will add spaces.

  • Without the planned expansion, the library will need approximately $3 million in renovations, replacements, updates, and code compliance.
